Fins for Fishing: Salt Water Fishing

Sight fishing for redfish - incredible !
One of the most unique and heralded fishing destinations in the world can be found on the southwest coast of Florida. Gazing across the flats and backcountry from Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor is a look back in time - Florida as it might have looked hundreds of years ago.

Fishing deep in the backcountry you will see miles of mangrove trees, large expanses of grass flats, an old fish house or two, oyster bars, sand bars and areas that look so fishy that you just can't resist making a cast or two. And rightfully so ! These areas are the homes and hangouts of some of the most popular gamefish that Florida has to offer - snook, redfish and spotted trout, an occasional tarpon.

Under the right conditions, some species can be sight-fished. Cruising under the mangroves, schooled-up in a pothole, or moving across a grass flat in water so shallow fish will "wake", their backs breaking the surface of the water. Redfish will be feeding off the bottom of a grass flat - their tails visible above the surface as the fish grubs for small crabs and shrimp. Have you ever seen a school of big snook bust on a school of baitfish ? It's not for the timid. Even the most seasoned anglers know that, from time to time, when the cast has to be right, you may experience some weakness in the knees.

From mid-May thru July, mighty tarpon - true giants - will be rolling just off of the beaches. Schools of 50 to 100 or more of these incredible fish will move within casting distance and usually inhale a properly presented live bait, artificial lure or fly. Tarpon average 100 pounds, monsters in the 150-pound range are not uncommon, and some in the 170 to 180-pound class are landed here every season. Try that on a fly rod !

Eco Tours
Contributing to the region's excellent fishing reputation are the vast tracks of fresh and salt-water wetlands protected by state and / or federal laws. The Charlotte Harbor - Pine Island Sound area is one of the largest estuaries in Florida and has relatively clean water that supports extensive grass beds and stands of mangroves. Several large sections of this estuarine complex are designated as state aquatic preserves, and there are strict regulations to protect water quality and marine life.

Visitors can take an Eco Tour where you can experience the preserve and its wildlife first hand - especially its diverse bird species including ospreys, eagles, pelicans, herons and egrets. Besides seeing fish that weigh as much as you, dolphins and manatees come so close you can practically touch them.
