On the 'riggers, dodgers & flies, big wobbling plugs and spoons are the most popular and effective baits. The "mooching" approach simply amounts to flatlining (often with some weight) a "cut bait" - actually a cut frozen herring on a tandem-hook rig - on a free-spool or "knuckle buster" style reel. On the larger charters, boats accommodating as many as twenty anglers at once, vertical jigging through a school of coho or over a submerged structure which attracts and holds "springs" is a third widely-used approach for chartering. In the many tidal cuts and backwater reaches in and around Tofino, flyfishing is steadily gaining a new following - so much so that at Weigh West Resort, a small fleet of whaler-style boats dedicated exclusively to flyfishing has been set up.The odd-looking but immensely popular halibut is held in equal favour amongst Weigh West anglers. Its unusual appearance, willingness to bite, large size (20 to 150 lb), stubborn resistance to being pulled off the bottom, and exquisite eating qualities make the "flat ones" a prized catch anywhere on the West Coast. Oftentimes caught incidentally while salmon fishing, more and more folks are targeting halibut. Vertical jigging cut baits or jigging "spoons" is another proven technique for hooking this big fish.

Commonly caught ground or bottom fish include ling cod and red snapper - fish that keep anglers busy between hookups with salmon or halibut. No matter your catch, the Weigh West staff will clean and prepare your catch as you specify. Filleted or steaked fish are flash frozen, containerized and packaged for easy shipment anywhere. Canneries are contracted to "can" salmon, suitably label and ship your catch to your home address. Many folks want a portion of their catch smoked, and Weigh West has a smoke house where that is readily accomplished.
