Lake
Nipissing has long been recognized as one of Canada's
best multi-species fishing lakes - no matter the season.
From the May season opener, through the summer, fall and
winter months - right up to ice-out - something is always
'on the bite" at Lake Nipissing. In season, the big lake
provides great fishing for Ontario's most popular sportfish
- walleye, jumbo yellow perch, northern pike, smallmouth
bass, musky, whitefish - as well as a variety of alternate
species, including cisco / herring, burbot / ling, sheephead,
several species of panfish and coarse fish.
Incredible
Spring Fishing
At
Lake Nipissing the May walleye opener kicks off the
fishing season and limit catches (4 fish) are the norm,
not the exception. An ambitious walleye stocking program
and the implementation of a "release slot" - walleyes
between 17-1/4 and 23-3/4 inches must be released -
have created bountiful walleye stocks and great fishing.
Early season fishing also provides good northern pike
fishing as well, but a closely guarded secret at Lake
Nipissing is the incredible jumbo yellow perch fishing
that is available from opening day through to mid-June.
At a good spot, using minnows as bait, daily (25) and
possession (50) limits are regularly accomplished in
an hour or two. The perch fishing rivals that on Lake
Simcoe in April. No, it's better at Nipissing because
there are walleyes as well.
Super Summer Angling
As
summer approaches, walleyes move out onto mid-lake humps
and shoals, around island clusters, and over the Waltonian
Reef. Nipissing jigs (jigs with stinger hook), live-bait,
snelled, slip and spinner rigs tipped with worms seem
always to tempt Nipissing walleyes.
The
smallmouth bass fishing on Lake Nipissing can be great,
but is largely overlooked in favour of walleyes and
pike. Shorelines, island saddles, rocky points, shoals,
sharp dropoffs and weedbeds hold numbers of bass that
have never been fished. Minnow-type jerkbaits, in-line
spinners, twistertail grubs, small topwater plugs, even
plastic worms and lizards will all provide exciting
bass action.

Fall
Bonanza
The
fishing season never ends at Lake Nipissing ! Come fall,
walleyes stage in bunches at predictable shallow-water
sites - river mouth areas, the mouths of spawning bays
(e.g. Callander Bay). Live minnows are best, but hungry
walleyes can be tempted by any number of baits, lures
and tactics.
The fall is also the best time to tackle Nipissing's
world-class muskies - fish up to 60 inches / 60 pounds.
Big plugs (e.g. Hi-Fins) cast or trolled across shoals,
rocky points, island saddles, and submerged weedbeds
are your best bet for a trophy. A well-known mecca for
musky hunters is the French River at the west end of
Lake Nipissing.
Hot Ice Fishing!
Lake
Nipissing has few rivals when it comes to providing
consistent ice fishing for walleye, perch, pike, whitefish,
cisco / herring, and burbot / ling. So good is the fishing
here that an on-ice community is established over the
famous Waltonian Reef - lean-to's, ice huts, even overnight
accommodations. Anglers
are taken by 12-passenger, heated Bombardiers to modern,
insulated, ice fishing huts, complete with wood stove
or propane heating. American Plan packages include accommodations,
meals, fishing, tip-ups, bait.Minnow-baited
jigs, snelled rigs and jigging spoons are popular and
effectives baits / lures for Nipissing's cold-water
quarry. For best results, work baits at various depths
in several holes to "pattern" fish, and don't hesitate
to move to new locations / holes to find fish.
The
Waltonian Inn
specializes in fishing vacations and is open year-round
to provide the best that Lake Nipissing has to offer.
Tackle, live bait, boat launch, mooring & rentals, fuel
and guide service are available. Both HK cottage and
AP lodge packages are available.
