Straddling
the Saskatchewan - NorthWest Territories boundary, Selwyn
Lake offers legendary far-north fishing for lake trout,
northern pike, and Arctic grayling. Flying out of Stoney
Rapids, SK, guests arrive at Selwyn Lake Lodge early enough
for a hearty breakfast and a full day of exciting fishing.Selwyn
lake is a sprawling lake, drained by the Porcupine River
watershed, and covering some 135 000 acres. Surrounded
by the rugged and rocky Canadian Shield, the lake itself
mirrors those features with hundreds of islands and shoals
dotting the lake. Cold, deep (300 + ft.) and clear (visibility
15-20 ft.),
it
is home to incredible numbers of lake trout and northern
pike and regularly produces trophy catches to Selwyn Lake
Lodge guests.Around
the lake are innumerable small bays, many ringed with
sparse weeds and broken rock, a few soft-bottomed - all
home to greedy and opportunisitc northern pike. Dozens
of streams and rivers are accessible from the lake, with
many offering outstanding Arctic grayling opportunities. The
Selwyn fishing season begins in early-to-mid June at ice
out and continues through to early September. A definitive
thermocline develops in mid-summer between 25 to 40 feet.
A strict catch and release policy is in place for Selwyn
Lake Lodge guests, with the exception of smaller fish
kept for shore lunch. Trophy catches are a daily event
- lake trout to 45 pounds are quite common, pike to 35
lb. One great thing about the fishing at Selwyn - anglers
can fish using a variety of techniques and lures, including
trolling, casting, vertical jigging, flycasting, even
topwater.
