After
filling in for a number of British blues bands in the early
'60's, Clapton rose to prominence with The Yardbirds, a lineup
that included all three British guitar heroes of the sixties:
Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck. Throughout his career,
Clapton turned his emotional turmoil into a rock classic.
His first major album came in 1963. He moved around with a
few top bands (Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla"), and his
'70's and '80's concerts and albums were consistently successful.
He made something of a second comeback in 1986, but his renewal
really came in 1992 with the release of his Grammy-Award-winning
"Tears in Heaven", a tribute to his four-year-old son, Connor,
who died in a fall from a Manhattan high-rise. In 1994, he
began once again to play the blues. His album, "From the Cradle",
was a return to the raw, traditional style of his early career,
and it was a hit with critics and fans alike. Already a double
inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of
The Yardbirds and Cream), a third nod as a solo artist is
an inevitable honor for this legendary guitarist.
